About us

Samba Styles

Rio Style

Authentic equipment for Rio Samba! In Rio's Samba schools, people play particular instruments such as caixas with strings or surdos with natural skins. Every Samba school has its own style and preferences and not all instruments are used in every Samba school, but this selection will help you to find your way around.

Bahia Style

Experience authentic instruments of Bahia and Afro Samba! Explore iconic Samba Reggae, Bloco Afro, and Timbalada percussion instruments: short surdos with nappa or synthetic heads, caixas with snare wires, repiniques and bacurinhas, timbals in wood or aluminum in many colours. Complete your sound with classic bells and ganzás - favorites that are a popular part of the European samba scene.

Maracatu Style

Explore the beautiful Maracatu instruments which are typically played in the Baque Virado. Alfaias, gongués and caixas de Maracatu as well as shekerés and even timbals, which have been added to some modern Maracatus for a couple of years now.

Samba de Mesa Style

Authentic percussion instruments for Samba de mesa and Pagode. The heartbeat are rebolo and tantan - they cannot miss! The reco reco replaces the caixa. Pandeiros with nylon heads, tamborin, repique de mão and repique de anel complete the roda. A cuica is always nice to have, ganzá or xequebalde and agogô can also be included. And of course - the cavaquinho, contributing the harmonies and let you join in the party round with lyrics and some caipirinhas!

Capoeira Style

Discover authentic instruments for your roda de Capoeira: the traditionally rope tuned atabaques, pandeiros with goat skin heads, small percussion and Capoeira accessories.

Forro Style

How to set up a traditional Forró session: one accordion, pretty vocals and groovy percussion: the zabumba for the bass and swing, triangle and agogô for the groove. Check out our authentic assortment of Forró instruments!

FAQ

General information about KALANGO
Who is Kalango?

Kalango was launched in 2002 by Thomas Mueller-Stoy and Klaus Urban, who are both active musicians in the European Samba scene. Now, we are a small team located in the south of Germany, Kalango is an online shop specialised in Brazilian Instruments. Decades of musical experience as musicians and a profound knowledge of percussion instruments are the lifeblood of the company. Numerous journeys to Brazil have inspired the companie's range of percussion and string instruments and samba accessories.

No. We want to concentrate on giving great service through our online-shop. Running a retail shop is not our concept. You might meet us at some Samba festivals like usually the Coburg Samba Festival each July in Germany, check our Blog and Facebook Site for details where and when we are around and drop past to meet us personally!

All Kalango instruments and accessories are new goods. Usually manufacturers and wholesalers deliver the instruments to us in their original packaging. An exception to this can be instruments which are hand-crafted in small workshops which we then carefully package for transport ourselves. Articles with minor and mainly optical defects or slight traces of use which don´t impair the use of the instrument in any way are marked as B-stock and are sold exclusively as such. For more details, please see below more information about B-stock articles.

We buy most of our products directly from the producers in Brazil. We are in regular contact with all manufacturers which enables us to get actively involved in product improvement and development.

Our website is our complete catalogue. All the products you see on our site marked as "in stock" are available for ordering. A few products are available for backordering, we will order them only when they are bought through our webshop.
